THE JUVÉDERM® LINE OF FILLERS: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO AGELESS BEAUTY

Many individuals turn to dermal fillers to achieve a more youthful appearance, as fillers can do so much without invasive procedures. They can restore lost volume, smooth out wrinkles, plump lips, enhance facial contours, fill out depressed acne scars, and correct facial asymmetry. Among the most acclaimed options in the field of medical aesthetics is the JUVÉDERM line of fillers. Developed by Allergan, a leading pharmaceutical company, these injectables have gained popularity for their natural-looking results and long-lasting effects. Let’s delve into the world of JUVÉDERM, exploring what these fillers are, how they work, the longevity of their effects, and how they compare to other fillers in the market.

Understanding the JUVÉDERM Line of Fillers

JUVÉDERM is a collection of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers designed to restore volume, reduce wrinkles, and rejuvenate the skin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body, so one of its advantages is that there are fewer reactions in patients. The JUVÉDERM line consists of several different formulations, each tailored to address specific cosmetic concerns:

  1. Cheeks and Chin – the JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC primarily adds volume to the cheeks and midface region, providing a lifting effect and restoring youthful contours. VOLUMA® XC is also used to add projection to the chin.
  2. Lips – JUVÉDERM ® VOLBELLA® XC is specifically formulated for lip augmentation and fine lines around the mouth. The JUVÉDERM ® ULTRA XC is also used for the lip and perioral area for lip augmentation.
  3. Jawline – the JUVÉDERM ® VOLLUX® XC is the only FDA-approved HA filler for defining and sculpting the jawline.
  4. Lines – JUVÉDERM ® ULTRA PLUS XC is effective for the smoothing of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as smile/laugh lines as well as lines that extend from the corners of the mouth to the chin called marionette lines.
  5. Undereyes – JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC is approved for improving the appearance of undereye hollows.

How JUVÉDERM Fillers Work

Hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic, meaning it attracts and retains water molecules, which helps to plump the skin and smooth out wrinkles. The filler integrates with the tissues, enhancing facial contours and providing a refreshed, natural look. JUVÉDERM fillers use Vycross® Technology which cross-links the HA molecules for a smoother gel and allows the molecule chains to stay clumped together. This slows the rate of absorption and provides longer-lasting results. The results are visible immediately after the treatment, with minimal downtime.

What to Expect During Your Filler Treatment

During your consultation at Vitalogy Skincare,  your Provider or Licensed Aesthetician will determine the appropriate filler type and amount based on your unique needs and desired outcome.

During the procedure, the targeted area is cleansed, and a topical numbing agent or local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort. The JUVÉDERM filler is then carefully injected with a fine needle into the specific layers of the skin where you would like results. Lastly, your Provider will review any aftercare instructions that may apply, and you can get right back to your day. Most filler procedures take between 15 to 30 minutes.

It is essential to note that while the procedure itself is generally well-tolerated, some patients might experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site. These side effects are temporary and typically resolve within a few days.

The Longevity of JUVÉDERM Effects

One of the most significant advantages of JUVÉDERM fillers is their longevity compared to other HA fillers. On average, the effects of JUVÉDERM last between 9 to 24 months, depending on the specific filler used, individual metabolism, lifestyle factors, and the treatment area.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC, known for its volumizing properties, tends to last the longest among the JUVÉDERM family, with results often remaining for up to 24 months.  VOLBELLA XC typically lasts between 12 to 18 months, providing sustained improvements in facial wrinkles and lip augmentation. JUVÉDERM ULTRA XC can last 6 to 12 months, and JUVÉDERM ULTRA+ XC, designed for deeper wrinkles, lasts around 9 to 12 months. Lastly, JUVÉDERM VOLUX XC lasts about 12 months.

It’s important to note that while JUVÉDERM fillers offer long-lasting results, individual experiences may vary. HA fillers are considered temporary because they are made from materials that the body eventually breaks down and absorbs. Follow-up treatments may be necessary to maintain the desired results.

How Does JUVÉDERM Compare with Other Fillers?

Vitalogy Skincare carries some of the JUVÉDERM line of fillers, as well as other brands of fillers, including RADIESSE ® and the Restylane® portfolio of products. All these dermal fillers are great at what they do. Your Dermatology Provider will recommend one based on your needs and the results you are trying to achieve.

  • JUVÉDERM and Restylane are hyaluronic acid-based fillers, but they have different formulations which differ in molecular weight and capabilities. The advantage of HA fillers is that they can be reversed using hyaluronidase if you don’t like the results or if there are complications.
  • Restylane also offers a line of fillers that can be used for different areas and concerns. Restylane has a more granular feel that can be a bit more cohesive, as compared to JUVÉDERM, and results typically last 6 to 12 months.
  • RADIESSE’s active ingredient is calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral typically found in human bones and teeth. Compared to HA fillers, this is a thicker, firmer material, making it effective for smile lines, more defined cheekbones, and jawlines. The effects of this material last about 18 months.
