What is Dermatopathology?

Dermatopathology is the study and diagnosis of cutaneous/skin diseases at a microscopic level. Once skin biopsy specimens are gathered, they are sent to our state-of-the-art Dermatopathology laboratory to be processed. Our team of highly-skilled histotechnologists focuses exclusively on processing skin specimens and has fine-tuned the art of producing exceptional quality histopathology slides. Additionally, our team performs ancillary tests (including immunoperoxidase and histochemical staining) that are used to diagnose a wide of variety skin disorders.

What is the difference between a Dermatologist and a Dermatopathologist?

A Dermatologist is a physician who specializes in the study of diseases of the skin both medically and surgically. A Dermatopathologist is a physician who microscopically evaluates and renders a diagnosis on the biopsies sent in by the Dermatologist.

How do Dermatopathologists work with my Dermatology Provider?

Communication is key between Dermatologists and Dermatopathologists as each interacts with patients differently. Dermatologists see the patient, diagnose their skin disease, and attain the skin to be biopsied. The Dermatopathologist evaluates the biopsy sent in by the Dermatologist and renders a diagnosis. It is key for both to communicate for better clinicopathologic correlation; ultimately, providing the patient with the best possible diagnoses, treatment, and care.

How does it benefit me to have a Dermatopathologist as part of my Dermatology team?

Having a Dermatopathologist as part of your team of Providers allows Vitalogy Skincare to provide you with the best possible care. Since Dermatopathologists have extensive training in microscopic evaluation of skin diseases, Dermatologists consult with them for improved diagnoses without the delay of having to wait for an external laboratory to respond.
