From Prevention to Treatment: The Imperative of Skin Cancer Awareness 

Skin cancer is a widespread concern, affecting millions globally, but early detection offers hope for a cure. Dr. Jennifer Hanson, a Board-Certified Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeon, discusses the types, signs, and prevention of skin cancer. 

Types of Skin Cancer: The three main types are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma. BCC and SCC are common but generally non-life-threatening, whereas melanoma is less common but more dangerous. 

Identifying Melanoma: You can identify potential melanoma using the ABCDE rule, which helps distinguish suspicious moles or skin lesions: 

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other half. 
  • B – Border: The edges are irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined. 
  • C – Color: The mole has multiple colors or an uneven distribution of color (shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue). 
  • D – Diameter: The spot is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller. 
  • E – Evolving: The mole changes in size, shape, or color over time, or develops new symptoms like itching or bleeding.

Body Areas to Check: Commonly overlooked areas include the scalp, ears, back of the neck, between toes, soles of feet, and genitals. Monthly self-exams and regular Dermatology visits are crucial. 

Risk Factors: Key risk factors include UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds, fair skin, history of sunburns, family and personal history of skin cancer, a weakened immune system, and exposure to certain chemicals. Notably, tanning beds significantly increase melanoma risk. 

Early Detection: Crucial for improving treatment success and preventing spread. Early stages can often be treated with minor procedures, while advanced cases require more complex treatments. 

Prevention Tips: Limit sun exposure, wear protective clothing, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+), avoid tanning beds, perform regular skin checks, protect children, stay in the shade, and be aware of family history.
