Q: How does laser hair removal work? 

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive technique that uses highly concentrated light to penetrate hair follicles andreducefuture hair growth. The melanin in the hair follicles absorbs the laser energy, which is then converted into heat, damaging the hair follicle while leaving the surrounding skin largely unaffected. The extent of the damage depends on various factors, including the color and thickness of the hair, as well as the type of laser used. Once the root has been destroyed or damaged, hair growth is reduced, and the treated area remains smooth and stubble-free.

Q: What are five reasons laser hair removal is a good treatment option? 

1.      Treatments do not take long: The laser emits pulses of light that target multiple hair follicles simultaneously, allowing for quick treatment of larger areas. This makes it faster than electrolysis, which typically treats one hair follicle at a time.

2.      Eliminates ingrown hairs: Ingrown hairs are a common problem with shaving or waxing. When the laser destroys the hair follicle, it prevents hair from growing back in a way that causes it to curl under the skin.

3.      Precision: Laser technology allows for precise targeting of specific areas without damaging the surrounding skin. It can effectively treat small or large areas, such as the face, legs, bikini line, underarms, or back.

4.      It saves time and money: Once you undergo a series of laser hair removal sessions, you can experience long periods without needing regular hair removal. This convenience saves time and effort in the long run.

5.      Long-lasting results: Laser hair removal provides long-term reduction or permanent hair removal. While it may not completely eliminate all hair, it significantly reduces hair growth, and the results can last for months or even years.

Q: Are multiple treatments needed? 

Yes, you will need multiple treatments for each area. Hair grows in cycles, and not all hairs are in the active growth phase simultaneously. For this reason, multiple treatment sessions are usually necessary to target hair follicles in different growth stages. Sessions are typically spaced several weeks apart, with the average number of treatments being six to nine in any given area. 

Q: Can laser hair removal be used to remove facial hair? 

Laser hair removal is a safe treatment that can permanently and effectively remove facial hair. It is an excellent way of getting rid of ingrown hairs and razor burns that come from shaving in men, and it avoids the harmful effects that waxing can have on your face. It is important to mention that lasers cannot treat fine, lightly colored vellus hair, also known as peach fuzz or baby hair. This is intended for darker, thicker hairs that typically grow in places like the chin or upper lip.

How do Neurotoxin Injectables Work?

Injectable neurotoxins (wrinkle-relaxing botulinum toxin type A) are the most common non-invasive aesthetic procedure in the U.S., according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. While collectively they are commonly called “Botox,” there are actually five different FDA-approved neurotoxins: BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and DAXXIFY. The newest entry in the neurotoxin market is DAXXIFY, which received FDA approval in September 2022.

All neurotoxins are injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in the muscle, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming. They can also treat muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and overactive bladders.

These injectable treatments are fast, minimally invasive, and have little to no downtime. Most people return to work or normal activities immediately after the procedure.

How Long do Results Last?

BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin generally last three to four months. Certainly, there will be patients who see shorter- and longer-lasting results. 

BOTOX®​ ​Cosmetic

BOTOX Cosmetic has been around for a long time. It’s a trusted product that has been widely used since 2002. Since its FDA approval in 2013, millions of men and women have tried it and continue to use it because it provides real, noticeable results. This prescription medication is injected into the muscles. It temporarily improves signs of aging, such as moderate to severe crow’s feet lines, forehead lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.

Lines and deep wrinkles in the face are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles when you smile, laugh, or frown. BOTOX Cosmetic, a purified protein derivative, can effectively minimize, prevent, and reverse many of the lines between your eyebrows, across your forehead, and around your eyes. BOTOX Cosmetic keeps the muscles relaxed by blocking impulses from the nerves to the tiny facial muscles related to expression, preventing contraction. 

XEOMIN®​

XEOMIN is an FDA-approved, clinically-proven neurotoxin that blocks muscle contractions that can cause frown lines and other expression lines. It is a prescription medication injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. XEOMIN’s double-filtered formula removes unnecessary proteins, so you get only what’s needed for smoother frown lines, treatment after treatment.

Dysport®

Dysport is a natural-looking, fast-acting, and long-lasting injection to help smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar line) in adults less than 65 years old. The treatment is more diluted than others and diffuses to a larger area upon injection. Repetitive facial movements and muscle contractions cause wrinkles, and Dysport works by temporarily reducing specific muscle activity. Results typically appear around 2-3 days after receiving the injections and can last up to 5 months with just one treatment.
