Although summer vacations are good for the human spirit they can sometimes take a toll on our skin.

Environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution, poor nutrition, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and even emotional or physical stress can lead to the formation of free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive, unstable molecules that cause oxidation and disrupt and destroy healthy, living cells. In the skin, this leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin where damage accumulates with time, much like fruit exposed to air over a period of time soon begins to brown.

Without adequate protection and repair, damaged skin is at great risk of premature aging and the development of skin cancer.

Sunscreen does a great job of protecting skin from ultraviolet exposure but that only accounts for 55% of free radical damage.1 The truth is, a person needs more than sunscreen to fully combat the damage and oxidation caused by free radicals.

Antioxidants are powerful molecules that work with the skin to neutralize free radicals and boost the skin’s own internal antioxidant defense system. Regular application of topical antioxidants helps the skin efficiently and effectively repair damaged cells. Healthy skin cells are better able to fight off mutated cells including pre-cancerous cells and other abnormal growths.

In addition to making topical antioxidants a part of a daily skin care regimen there are three basic practices essential to ensuring skin health that everyone can begin to follow right away:

  • Drink plenty of water: eight, 8-ounce glasses of water every day
  • Eat nutritious foods: get the vitamins skin needs from fresh fruits and veggies
  • Get adequate rest: at least six to eight hours of sleep a night
  • Skin is the body's largest organ and works hard to protect the rest of its members against harmful elements like free radicals, yet skin health is often an afterthought, especially in the harsh summer months. Take steps now to correct damage and brighten your skin, giving it the vacation it deserves.
